Gema Polanco Asensi (1992, Valencia) is a Spanish artist, photographer and video artist. In 2011 she moved to London to study a foundation course in Art and Design at University of the Arts London. In 2015 she graduated with a BA (hons) Photography at London College of Communication. Polanco Asensi has been the assistant of the photographer and writer Carol Mavor in her project "Like a lake," producing the work for the group exhibition at Lychee One gallery with the artists Esther Teichmann and Chantal Faust. Soon after working on this project she recognized all of the societal pressure in which she had grown up with. Which were hidden and oppressive tendencies that created a blur to reality. Growing up in a traditional Catholic society she decided to dive deep and investigate this world that she was raised by, as it is reflected in all of her projects. From 2013 she began to participate in group exhibitions around Europe. In 2015 her works began to appear in publications and art festivals such as; Anormal magazine, Source, PHotoEspaña, PhotoRomania, ladyfest and more. In 2016 Polanco Asensi creates Navaja Automatica, her own publishing editorial with the artist IndustriasDoc. Whose books have participated in festivals and events like the offprintsale at the Tate Modern, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Reina Sofia, Ladyfest festival of Barcelona, and more. Currently she has won the 2016-2017 collaboration grant INDAGA'T part of the department of visual arts and design at the University of Barcelona where she is studying the Visual Arts and Education MA. She is also featured in The Self-Portrait in Contemporary Photography book by Giorgio Bonomi. Recently she has won the new talent prize of Artphoto Barcelona Festival, IDEP Education Grant, and Centro Civic Pati i llimona exhibition grant.
